Phu Quoc in 2 Nights (Without Feeling Rushed)

As someone who usually advocates for slow travel, I was pretty skeptical about flying to another country for just two nights.

But living in Bangkok means you have incredible access to the rest of Southeast Asia. With just a 1 hour and 20 minute flight, Preaw and I decided to test if a two-night stay in Phu Quoc, Vietnam, was actually doable without feeling entirely rushed. It is one of our favourite quick breaks from our base in Thailand, where the island and city guides keep us coming back.

It is the perfect weekend escape, provided you get your flight times right and know exactly what to skip.

Here is our exact strategy for splitting the island and getting two completely different experiences in one short trip.

The 2-Night Flight Strategy

Making two nights feel like a proper holiday comes down to the flight times.

• Day 1 (Arrive at 11:00 AM): We landed, Phu Quoc airport was very busy, but we were able to drop our bags at the hotel by 1pm. This gave us most of the afternoon to start exploring.
• Day 2: Full day to enjoy (and switch hotels midday after check out).
• Day 3 (Depart at 5:00 PM): Booking a late afternoon flight gave us a full beach morning and a relaxed lunch before leaving for the airport at 1:30 PM.

You can almost always leave your suitcase at a hotel reception before you check in after you check out. By doing this, we essentially sneaked in what felt like one extra day of holiday despite having two travel days.

Night 1: Sunset Town (Weird, But in a Good Way)

 For our first night, we stayed in Sunset Town. It is a highly unique and slightly weird European replica town.

And I mean weird in a good way.

The town has recreated famous European landmarks and architecture, but many of the buildings are still completely empty. When you are scooting around, it genuinely feels like you have a massive theme park or an abandoned movie set entirely to yourself. The weather was perfect, the streets were quiet, and it was brilliant for taking photos.

Skip the Dodgy Hotel Bikes

A quick warning about renting scooters here. Our hotel originally provided a half-broken motorbike with a dodgy brake and an engine warning light. We immediately swapped it out.

Instead, we rented a cool yellow electric bike from Hong Phat Motorbike Rental. The owner is a chill guy with solid reviews, and he gave us absolutely no issues when returning the bike.

Worth saying while we are on the subject of dodgy brakes: check your travel insurance actually covers you on two wheels before you get on one. Plenty of policies exclude motorbikes entirely, or only cover you if you hold the right licence at home. I came off a scooter in Bangkok and was very glad to be covered. SafetyWing is what I use.

Where to Stay in Sunset Town, Phu Quoc - The Balcony Firework Hack

Sunset Town has a daily fireworks show. Instead of paying entrance fees or fighting for a spot in the crowded viewing areas, we specifically booked a hotel room with a balcony view in Lotus Home Cafe.

Let’s be realistic. Fireworks are fun for about five minutes anyway. Getting to watch the show from the comfort of our own room with a cold drink was a massive win.

Khem Beach over Cable Cars

You have probably heard of the world’s longest over-sea cable car located here, connecting An Thoi to Hon Thom Island in about 25 minutes. It looks great, but we are “chill at the beach” people and could not be bothered to wait in the crowds and we were not interested in the waterpark on the other side.

If you want to skip the waterparks like we did, take your scooter and make the 10-minute ride over to Khem Beach. We spent a great morning there, followed by excellent seafood and drinks at Craft Beer.

Night 2: Ong Lang Beach (Pure Chill)

For the second night, we completely switched gears and headed to the opposite end of the island.

Keep in mind that you are a bit out of the way in Ong Lang. You should only go here if you want to completely relax, which is something we love doing for at least half of the trip. It is all about quiet resort life and unwinding before heading back to the city.

Where to Stay in Ong Lang, Phu Quoc

We actually stayed somewhere that we did not love. I will not mention the name because although the view was amazing, the staff were unfortunately not great.

Instead, I highly recommend looking into Arcarine Beach Resort. We grabbed a meal at their restaurant and absolutely loved it. The staff were incredibly friendly, the food was fantastic, and the hotel itself looked great. It is definitely where we will be booking next time.

Chill and Kayak on the Beach

The main agenda here is simply enjoying the sand and switching off. If you do want a tiny bit of activity, most of the hotel resorts in this area have kayak rentals available right on the beach. It is a perfect, low-effort way to get out on the water for an hour before heading back to your sun lounger.

The Phu Quoc Night Market

If you find yourself wanting a bit more hustle and bustle without actually staying in the chaotic areas, the Phu Quoc Night Market is only a 15-20 minute taxi ride away.

It is located on Bach Dang Street and is open daily from 5 PM to 11 PM. We opted out since our main objective was to just chill at the resort, but it is a great evening add-on if you want to grab some street food.

The Verdict

We completely skipped the busy theme parks and the major tourist traps. If you want to fit those in, you will definitely need to add a third night to your itinerary.

But for a quick, relaxed island escape, this pacing was absolutely perfect. I would do it again.
